Yep, those were my early days of freelancing.

Stuck in a loop of crafting proposals and hitting send, I felt like I was throwing my work into a black hole.

Six whole months flew by, and my inbox remained stubbornly empty.

Self-doubt started to gnaw at me.

Was I good enough? Did I choose the wrong path? But then, a glimmer of hope.

A notification popped up on Fiverr, my first-ever order!

It was a tiny $5 gig, a simple writing task, but to me, it was a golden ticket.

Finally, someone believed in my skills!

That first project might not have led to a waterfall of clients, but it was a spark that ignited my freelance journey.

From there, it was a slow and steady climb.

I kept putting myself out there, sending proposals, and connecting with other freelancers.

Slowly but surely, the orders started trickling in.

My earnings, once nonexistent, began to tick upward.

There were even a couple of proud moments where I levelled up to a Level 2 seller on Fiverr—a little badge of honour for all the hard work!

Fast forward to today, and I’m a full-time freelancer (with a side job in government for some extra stability).

It’s not all rainbows and unicorns, but I’m making a good living doing work I enjoy.

The best part? I’ve collaborated with clients from all around the globe, tackling projects that keep my skills sharp and my mind buzzing.

Now, if you’re starting your freelance adventure, here’s the biggest piece of advice I can offer: don’t get discouraged.

Building a successful freelance business takes time, dedication, and a whole lot of hustle.

There will be days when the inbox feels empty, and self-doubt tries to creep in.

But remember that first $5 order?

That tiny spark of success? That’s the fuel you need to keep pushing forward.

Here are a few other nuggets of wisdom I’ve picked up along the way:

  • Be Patient: Building a strong client base takes time. Don’t expect overnight success.
  • Refine Your Skills: Always be learning and improving your craft. Take online courses, attend workshops, or find a mentor.
  • Deliver High-Quality Work: This is the golden rule. Happy clients lead to repeat business and referrals.
  • Network Like Crazy: Connect with other freelancers, potential clients, and anyone in your field. You never know who might have a lead for you.
  • Market Yourself: Build a strong online presence with a professional website or portfolio. Be active on social media and relevant online communities.

Freelancing isn’t for everyone. It can be demanding, and no boss is holding your hand.

But for those who crave freedom, flexibility, and the chance to be their boss, it can be incredibly rewarding.

So, if you’re starting, take a deep breath, keep hustling, and remember—that first tiny spark can light the way to a fulfilling freelance career.
